General info on Spinel :
Spinel is the great imposter of gemstone history : many famous rubies in crown jewels around the world are actually spinel. The most famous is the Black Prince´s Ruby, a magnificent 170 ct red spinel that currently adorns the Imperial State crown in the British Crown Jewels. The Timur Ruby, a 352 ct red spinel now owned by Queen Elisabeth, has the name of some of the Mughai emperors who previously owned it, engraved on its face, an undeniable pedigree. In Burma (Myanmar), where some of the most beautiful colors are mined, spinel was recognized as a separate gem species as early as 1587. In other countries the masquerade lasted for hundreds of years after that.
Spinels have a hardness scale of 8,0 which puts them in the quality cutting range of rubies and sapphires.
Prices are less important than rubies but the last 2 years spinels have risen more then 200% in price setting due to the difficult mining conditions and the lack of raw material.
Spinels are considered as investment stones in the near future.
